About Us

Staffordshire Scientific Services is an innovative, flexible, not for profit business unit within the Public Protection arm of Staffordshire County Council.

In operation since 1929, our Public Analysts and highly qualified scientific staff have been working to protect the public from the deliberate or accidental introduction of harmful food, drinks and animal feeding stuffs into the marketplace for over 82 years.

As well as fulfilling our primary purpose of serving the regulatory needs of local authorities across the midlands and beyond, we have also built up a large portfolio of customers (both public and private) throughout the UK and internationally. This has allowed us to fulfil our goal of sourcing external capital for investment in equipment and personnel - enabling services to be delivered in a way that would not be possible for the authority on its own.

The laboratory is accredited to UKAS Quality Standard ISO/IEC 17025 and is an Official Control Laboratory as defined by European legislation.

Our Services for Businesses

  • Comprehensive scientific sample testing and process monitoring service to support your business needs
  • Support your business in meeting its environmental and legal obligations
  • Fulfil legal or customer requirements to help you set-up your business
  • Interpret and provide key data with expert advice
  • Subcontract work from other laboratories and consultancies when they are unable to carry out analysis themselves

We have an impressive list of private customers, ranging from local startup businesses to large well-established multinational organisations.

Our Services To The Public

Public Analysts were first appointed 150 years ago and have been instrumental in preventing hundreds of thousands of public health and safety problems.

We routinely:

  • Contribute to the evolution of new laws and regulatory frameworks to protect all sections of the public.
  • Support Trading Standards, Animal Health and Enviromental Health Organisations
  • Work closely with Defra, the FSA and other central government organisations

As the quantity of imported goods to the UK continues to expand, the safety of goods arriving at air and sea ports is becoming increasingly important as well as the safety of goods found locally. Our role in the analysis of such goods plays its part in ensuring a fair trading environment.

As part of ISO/IEC 17025 quality accreditation we participate in FAPAS, Aquacheck, NETCEN and other European proficiency testing schemes.
