  • Test the workplace for a wide range of noxious gases and solvent vapours

C.O.S.H.H. (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulation)

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (C.O.S.H.H.) are set out under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

The fundamental requirements of the C.O.S.H.H. regulations are:

  • Assessment of health risks
  • The prevention or adequate control of exposure
  • The provision and maintenance of proper control measures and personal protective equipment
  • Information, instruction and training
  • Monitoring the levels of exposure and the provision of suitable health surveillance

Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation & restriction of Chemicals (REACH)

On 1st June 2007, REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals) EU legislation came into force, harmonising a number of European Directives and Regulations with a single system.

The aims of REACH include:

  • To provide a high level of protection of human health and the environment from the use of chemicals
  • To make the people who place chemicals on the market (manufacturers and importers) responsible for understanding and managing the risks associated with their use
  • To allow the free movement of substances on the EU market
  • To enhance innovation and competitiveness within the EU chemicals industry
  • To promote the use of alternative methods for the assessment of the hazardous properties of substances
