MP Nigel Mills visits Staffordshire Scientific Services

Jan 2015

Nigel Mills, the MP for Amber Valley in Derbyshire, was the guest of Staffordshire Scientific Services on Friday 9 January 2015.

Isobel Wakerell explains the testing of food for allergens

As well as serving Staffordshire, Scientific Services also provide scientific advice and a public analyst service to other local authorities including Derbyshire and its borough and district councils. Staffordshire Scientific Services is one of the remaining six local-authority run laboratories in England. Mr Mills met the Public Analyst, Dr Frank Hollywood the Head of Scientific Services and Trish Caldwell the Business Support Manager who leads a number of regulatory services of Staffordshire County Council.  Mr Mills was able to hear first-hand some of the challenges which the laboratory faces providing these services and potential impacts of the recent Elliot Review on Food and Feed Enforcement.

Mr Mills was taken around the laboratory and was able to see examples of work being carried out in the laboratory. These included work on allergens in foods such as gluten. He was also able to observe food being tested for traces of peanut which is especially important for people with nut allergies.

Dr Hollywood demonstrates the rapid analysis of spirits for alcohol content to Mr Mills and Trish Caldwell.

Real-time PCR determination of meat samples for species identification was explained to Mr Mills. This new cutting-edge technique is able to provide confident results to the consumer following recent adulteration scares including the “horse meat scandal”.

Work on food complaints was demonstrated and Mr Mills was able to see some of the “Rogue’s Gallery” of items found in food.

Scientific Services provides support, advice and analysis to local authorities, businesses and private individuals.
